The Urgency

Human trafficking is a global crisis that has been exacerbated by recent events, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of detected victims fell by 11% in 2020, partly due to reduced opportunities for traffickers but also weakened law enforcement capacities. The pandemic has increased vulnerabilities, making it more challenging to rescue victims and bring criminals to justice. The war in Ukraine and other conflicts have also elevated trafficking risks for displaced populations. Women and children are particularly vulnerable, with female victims subjected to physical or extreme violence at a rate three times higher than males.
